Introducing the Buy With Confidence Scheme

What is it?

The Buy With Confidence and CustomerFirst schemes were initiated by Hampshire County Council and Devon County Council respectively to help businesses comply with the law while improving consumer protection through a partnership approach. Both schemes have now spread to a number of Local Authorities across the South and continue to grow.
It has been agreed that the two schemes will merge under the name and logo of Buy With Confidence.
Businesses signing up to their responsibilities set down in the rules the Scheme will become 'Approved Members'. The scheme also includes a clear statement of the service that the scheme operators will provide member businesses.

What's in it for businesses?

  • Independent recognition of your business standards
  • Beneficial publicity
  • Proof of membership by Certificate for display on your premises and use of logo
  • Pre-entry vetting to ensure the credibility of the scheme and that high standards are maintained
  • Your company's name on a list held by your Local Authority to recommend to consumers
  • A place on the 'Buy With Confidence' website with a 'hot link' to your own site for potential customers
  • Increased consumer confidence and reduced complaints
  • A better relationship with regulators based on co-operation rather than enforcement
  • A named contact for your business with the Trading Standards Service
  • Information on new legislation, trade scams etc

Who's running it?

The Scheme is run by a partnership of local Trading Standards Services. See Areas We Cover for a full list of members and relevant contact details.

Limitations of the Scheme

We cannot guarantee the financial standing of members nor their health and safety procedures. Similarly we cannot be sure that their work will never give rise to complaint, but should this be the case, any difficulties will be dealt with fairly.

What will it cost?

Membership of scheme does involve expense on the part of the local authorities involved. Some local authorities pass this on to members in the form of an annual fee, while others are happy to absorb the cost so that membership is free. For a list of authorities and fees please see the Areas We Cover section.

How does a business apply?

If you are interested in joining the Scheme it is important that you read the requirements set out in the conditions document. If, having read the requirements you would like to apply, just complete an application form or the electronic application form on this website.
